Application:
The hardness of gemstones is closely related to its anti-wear properties and is an important factor in determining the value of gemstones. There are two types of gemstone hardness measurement: indirect visual estimation method and direct measurement method.

1. Indirect visual estimation method
The hardness of a gemstone can be reflected in the smoothness of the facets and the sharpness of the edges after processing. Under a magnifying glass, it can be seen that the facets of gemstones of hardness size are smooth, flat and sharp. Indirect visual inspection is a non-destructive approximate hardness identification method.

2, the direct measurement method
This method is based on the comparison of the engraving between the gemstone mineral to be tested and the standard hardness mineral. In 1982, German mineralogist Moss proposed a standard mineral with grades: talc-1, gypsum-2, calcite-3, fluorite-4, apatite-5, orthoclase-6, quartz- 7, Topaz-8, Corundum-9, Diamond-10.
The hardness gap between corundum and diamond is the largest.

The hardness of the tested sample is judged by whether there are scratches: if there are scratches, it means that the hardness of the sample is lower than that of the hardness pen; if it does not scratch, it means that the hardness of the sample is higher than that of the hardness pen.

3, the use of skills and precautions
1 Indirectly assess the hardness of the sample first;

2 Find an inconspicuous place, and mark the sample with a hardness pen that is 1 to 2 lower than the visual hardness level. If it does not move, it means that the hardness of the sample is higher than that of the hardness pen, and then use a higher hardness pen to inscribe the sample. Scratch, repeat the operation, if there are only slight traces, it means that the hardness of the sample is equivalent to the hardness of the hardness pen, and then use a higher hardness pen to scribe, repeat the operation, if there are traces, it means that the hardness of the sample is lower than the hardness The hardness of the pen, at this time, the hardness of the tested sample or its range can be judged;

3. Please handle it gently during use, pay attention to the moderate scribing force, neither too light nor too heavy, pay attention to maintenance for long-term use;
 

1. Because the direct scribing method is used to measure the hardness, it is destructive to the gemstones, so it is generally not allowed to use this method on the finished gemstones.
